President of the Nigerian Wrestling Referees, Usman Yusuf has highlighted ignorance of adjusted rules as the main reason why Nigeria records low medals at International Wrestling Championships.
Speaking with journalist in Abuja, Usman Yusuf said Nigeria possesses good athletes and experienced coaches but the problem encountered by Nigeria wrestlers is the ignorance of adjusted rules by the United World Wrestling (UWW).
Usman noted that for the game to grow rules must be modified.
“I observed that for the past ten (10) years in so many international competitions, Nigeria often lose in the finals due to technicalities; adjustment of rules is very important for the game to grow” added Usman.
“I am calling on the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports to kindly consider referees when camps are open for athletes; it should not only be when they want to travel for tournament that you then invite us. Referees ought to be in camp to enlighten the athletes and coaches to know the new rules; this is the area where we always have problem”, said the president.
“I am kindly letting the Director General know that this is the major problem Nigeria athletes encounter in most of their invited tournament which makes them lose in the finals” he asserted.
President of the Nigerian Wrestling Referees advised athletes to acquaint themselves with new rules most especially Grecco Roman wrestlers.
Usman who is the most senior international wrestling referee in West Africa was rated the best referee in Africa at the last African Championships June 2015 held in Cairo, Egypt.
