Spencer Lee (USA) became one of the youngest wrestlers to ever win a Junior world title Satuday night when the 16-year-old 50kg scrapper rolled past Alireza GOODARZI (IRI) by technical fall, 10-0 in only 48 seconds.
LEE (USA) was the first in a series of wrestlers to derail what could have been a banner night for the Iranian side. The Asian squad placed four in the finals, but only one a single title.
Iran’s sole champion came at 60kg when Iman SADEGHI (IRI) took gold medal with a lopsided 12-2 technical fall against Ibrahim ABDELHAMID (EGY).
The Egyptian has pressed on through tough quarterfinal and semifinal matches, but his luck came up short against Sadeghi who bounced back from an early takedown to earn the ten point differential and world title.
Nabiev GHADIZHI (RUS) handed the Iranians their second loss of the night beating Reza MOZAFFAR (IRI), 7-5 in a topsy-turvy scramble-heavy 74kg final. After an early lead by the Russian wrestler, Mozaffar found back-to-back takedowns to take the lead via criteria, 5-5.
But it wasn’t enough as Ghadizhi scrambled to a later takedown with 10 seconds remaining to seal up a 7-5 win and earn Russia their first Junior world champions gold medal in freestyle wrestling.
