Head coach Nigeria Weightlifting Federation; Ekanem Andrew has confirmed that two weightlifters have qualified for the Rio Olympic Games.
Ekanem in Uyo said Miriam Usman, a +75 kg and Victoria Adesanmi, 63kg both gained their slots from Olympic qualifiers staged in the Houston, Texas, U.S, in November.
He said the federation ought to travel to Houston with four (4) weightlifters but two (2) were approved.
“We secured two (2) slots from both weightlifters in the individual category and still expect to participate as a team”, he said.
He noted that the federation will partake in the 2016 African Championships scheduled from May 12–20, 2016 in Yaoundé, Cameroon.
The coach said initially it was slated for South Africa but later moved to Cameroon
“Preparations for the Africa Championship will commence soon; as the weightlifters shall leave no stone unturned”, Ekanem ended.
It will be recalled that a Member of the Board of the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF), George Aluo, appealed to the National Sports Commission (NSC) to approve four of Nigeria’s weightlifters to attend an Olympic qualifying championship in Houston, U.S.A.
