The Nigerian Taekwondo team will not be competing at the Rio 2016 Olympics.
This is the first time since Athens 2004 Olympics.
The four-man team consisting of Uzoamaka Otuadimma (+67Kg) a bronze at the Commonwealth Games in 2014, who also got a gold medal at the African Games in Congo, Chinazom Nwosu (-57Kg), Edwin Samson (-68Kg) and Jamilu Mohammed (-58Kg) a 2015 All Africa Games and Commonwealth medalist failed to qualify for the Olympics for the first time in its history.
Three of Nigeria fighters lost in the semi-finals while Jamilu Mohammed had been disqualified for overweight in the men’s -58kg
African Champion, Uzoamaka Otuadinma, and African Games silver medallist, Chinazum Nwosu both narrowly lost to Morocco while Edwin Samson lost to Senegal via second round stoppage via kick to mouth.
In the semi-final, Chinazom Nwosu beat athletes from Ethopia, Ayalew Metadel (10-2) before losing to Morocco’s El Meslahy Hakima
Elsewhere in the semi finals, Uzoamaka Otuadinma beat Swaziland’s Munave Carlota (9-4) before bowing to Morocco’s Dislam Wiam, while Edwin Samson Edwin Samson defeated the athletes from Togo and Algeria to qualify and pick a ticket for the semi-finals against the Senegalese Dieye Balla who is African number 1.
Samson lost to the Senegalese by 3-0 points.
