Nigeria male freestyle wrestlers on Sunday increased the tally of the team to 10 medals after winning one gold, one Silver and two bronze at the just concluded 2016 Senior African Wrestling Championship in Alexandria, Egypt.
2014 Commonwealth Bronze medalist and Captain, Daniel Amas (65Kg) won Nigeria’s only Gold in the male freestyle after humiliating Abdelhamid Aly (Egypt) by 13-2 points.
Amas defeated Jason Afrikaner (Nambia) in the qualification by technical superiority 10-0, while injury stopped Senegalese Jean Bernard Diadia from wrestling before Amas went ahead to humble South Africa’s Terry Killy Jr Van Rensburg in the semi finals by technical superiority 10-0.
Meanwhile, 2014 Commonwealth silver medalist, Ebikewenimo Welson bowed in the final to senegalese Adama DIATTA, settling for silver.
Melvin Bibo (74Kg) who lost in the qualifying series to Augusto Midana bounced back to win a bronze medal for the nation
The 2015 All Africa Games Gold medalist settled for a bronze against Morocco’s Yassine Sardi by technical superiority 10-0.
All Africa Gold medalists, Soso Tamara (97Kg) also won a bronze by seeing off Aristide Diatta (Senegal) by 6-1 points. Tamara who was upset for losing out in the quarterfinal pound on Morocco’s Anas El Mkabber in the repechage to have a chance of winning a bronze medal.
