Imo state-based policeman, Raphael Ubah emerged the best athlete in the male category at the maiden edition of the Dr. Rafiu Ladipo National ArmWrestling Open Championship held at the National Stadium, Lagos.
Ubah, who competed as a member of the Energy ArmWrestling club of Owerri, defeated all opponents he faced in the 100+kg class in the competition that 36 male athletes registered for went home with a giant trophy and a gold medal.
10 athletes registered for the female class and eight students’ entries. Chisom Ugwuani, also of the Energy Club of Owerri won the silver medal, while Ogunbanwo Sunday from Ogun state finished third in the 100+kg class male.
In the keenly contested championships, national women’s champion, Ijeoma Soribe, in the women’s 80kg class retained her title when she defeated Ibiyeye Shukurat and Bukola Adeyeye who placed second and third respectively.
Her brilliance earned her the award for the best female athlete. She also went home with a giant trophy and a gold medal.
