The Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF) will today (Friday) depart the country with seven female weightlifters ahead of the continental Olympics qualifier in Yaoundé.
The qualifier is for Yaoundé, Cameroon from 12th to 20th May, 2016.
The female lifters are; Mariam Usman, Victoria Adesanmi, Balikis Otnula, Chineye Fidelis, Rachael Sylvester, Monica Uweh and Fatima Yakubu.
The team will be monitored by Head Coach, Cosmos Samson and Patrick Bassey who led Nigerian lifters to Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and London 2012 Olympics respectively.
Cosmos said the team is today (Friday) to enable them to acclimatise with the weather.
The head coach added that the Olympic qualifier requires the highest level of commitment as they must be sure of the quality of lifters to represent the nation.
He said the selected lifters have been tested and have proved their competencies at various continental and world championships.
The championships, being organised by the African Weightlifting Federation (AWF) would be a qualifiers for upcoming Rio Olympics, scheduled for Aug. 7 to Aug. 21,
It will be recalled that after a board meeting by the Nigeria weightlifting federation on 14th April 2016, fifteen (15) fit lifters were resumed camp on Saturday, 16th April 2016.
Naijacombatcorner also recalls that the lifters consist of eight male and seven female athletes.
But two days after their arrival in Abuja (National Stadium Package B), the male lifters were decamped because the federation could not access the required funds to sponsor the team.
