Wayde van Niekerk has been confirmed as South Africa’s flag-bearer at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Rio next month.
The 24-year-old Van Niekerk is expected to be a strong contender for a gold medal in the men’s 400 meter event after beating all his rivals at the World Championships in Beijing last year.
Meanwhile, Sascoc have also confirmed that Paralympic javelin thrower Zanele Situ will carry the South African flag at the Paralympics, which will also take place in Rio following the Olympics.
Team South Africa’s Rio Olympic and Paralympic teams enjoyed a gala farewell dinner in Gauteng on Friday evening.
Members of both teams were wished well by a host of Very Important People ahead of the Olympics which officially open on 5 August and the Paralympics on 7 September.
Reacting via his twitter handle, Wayde van Niekerk said “Going through my notifications, I’m so humbled and overwhelmed by all the kind words. Thank you all. I’ll carry the flag with pride”.
