The Nigeria Olympics Committee (NOC) has distanced itself from the appointment of John Obi Mikel as captain of Team Nigeria to the Rio Olympics.
The Secretary General of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, Comrade Tunde Popoola stated neither he, nor the organization he represents, the NOC was aware of the captain’s appointment.
Technically, the announcement of Team Nigeria leadership is usually done based on consultation between the NOC and the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports.
It will be recalled that on On Tuesday Special Assistant to the Minister of Youth and Sports, Nneka Ikem Anibeze sent out a press statement, announcing the appointment of Mikel as Team Nigeria captain to Rio2016.
Popoola’s answer clearly portrays the fact that Mikel’s captaincy was a creation of the Ministry of Sports and Youth Development as the NOC was not contacted for the all-important appointment.
This is against the norm as the appointment of captain of Team Nigeria is usually a consensus between the Ministry and the NOC which is the facilitator of Team Nigeria’s participation in the Olympics.
