Western sports threatens the existence of traditional wrestling- Gambo

Nigeria Traditional wrestler, Sunday Oppiah

Head Coach, Kogi State Traditional Wrestling Association, Gambo Agbem in Lokoja advised traditional rulers in Nigeria  to make traditional wrestling compulsory during  cultural festivals.

According to Agbem, traditional wrestling is facing serious competition since the inroduction of western sports into the country.

He said the sport is a game of our fore-fathers and should not be left to die a natural death.

Agbem attributed the development to the poor attention given to traditional sports due to lack of interest in local things by Nigerians.

“The big problem I have with Nigerians is that they don’t appreciate anything made in Nigeria. They see it either as fake or substandard,” Agbem said.

He added that there is a need to revive the sport and give the youth the opportunity to express themselves through traditional wrestling.
